Bush Bean Trio

The Bush Bean Trio, ‘Phaseolus vulgaris’, is a three-bean “salad” in a packet. This trio of Blue Lake 274, Cherokee Wax, and Purple Queen bush beans is unsurpassed for flavor, productivity, reliability and hardiness. They have a wonderful fresh flavor and are ideal for canning or freezing. They create a colorful combination for creative cooking. The snap bean or bush bean is eaten pod and all, and is one of those vegetables like tomatoes that tastes significantly better when grown at home rather than bought at the grocery store. Plant in the spring after last average frost date. For all areas, bush beans can be planted in succession to produce beans all season. Seed a new crop every 7 to 14 days for up to 60 days before the last frost. In very hot summer areas, beans should be planted in mid-March. The soil should be well drained and high in organic matter. Asparagus - Purple Passion

The Purple Passion Asparagus, Asparagus officinalis ‘Purple Passion’, has tender spears that are a beautiful deep burgundy color and measure up to 3/4 inches in diameter. This asparagus is more tender, mild and sweet than standard varieties with 20% higher sugar content and is often eaten raw. It is vigorous and productive, producing spears a year earlier than most varieties. It can be grown all over the U. S. It provides excellent purple color if added to salads raw, but turns green when cooked. When cooked, the sweetness gives this asparagus a mild, nutty flavor. Purple Passion has some resistance to rust, root/crown rot and fusarium. Asparagus is the earliest vegetable harvested fresh from the garden each spring. It is known for its flavor and nutrition. It’s an excellent source of vitamin A, and contains significant amounts of vitamin C, riboflavin, phosphorus and calcium. One cup of cooked fresh asparagus contains only 30 calories! Asparagus is a perennial plant that comes back from the same root system each year. A productive bed of asparagus can last 15 years or longer. It needs well-drained, deep soil and plenty of sunlight; at least 8 hours daily.

Mache Corn Salad - Big Seeded

The Mache Corn Salad Big Seeded, ‘Valerianella locusta’, has the mildest flavor and softest texture of any salad green. The leaves are so tender, they melt in your mouth. We chose the big-seeded Mache variety because it handles spring/summer heat without getting bitter. Great for both north and south gardens. This old garden green, enjoyed in the late stone age, contrasts nicely with the sharp-flavored greens in salads. It tastes delightful cooked quickly like spinach and combines nicely with fruits and vegetables. Mache Corn Salad is cool season annual. In northern climates, plant in early spring as soon as the ground is workable. In mild climates, plant in the fall for winter harvest. Mache prefers fertile, moist, and well drained soil. Mache is good for intercropping among larger vegetables such as broccoli and looks great with other greens. To harvest, simply cut off at ground level. The leaves can be picked off when they are 1 to 2 inches long.

Celery - Chinese - Kin-Tsai

The Celery Chinese Kin-Tsai (Qin cai, Kun choi), ‘Apium graveolens’, is one of the most widely grown vegetables in China. The leaves have a strong celery flavor that is essential for Chinese cuisine. In China, Chinese Celery is an ancient vegetable. In 1972, bamboo slips, used to record recipes, were excavated from the Han dynasty tombs. Chinese celery was one of the ingredients on those recipes. The flavor is more robust than American celery. The leaves are generally stir-fried and incorporated into meat and fish dishes. It is also used in soups, stews, and rice dishes. Plant 5 weeks before last frost date. It can be sown every 6 weeks through the summer for continual crops. In warm climates, sow in the fall. The soil should be well drained and very fertile with lots of organic matter. Cut individual stems or harvest the whole plant about 1 inch above the ground.

Basil - Genovese

The Basil Genovese Italian, ‘Ocimum basilicum’, is widely grown in Italy. Genovese basil has a strong basil flavor and aroma and is a favorite for pesto. There is nothing like the smell of basil. Basil is the smell of summer. Genovese basil will not disappoint the basil lover. It has a particularly strong fragrance and flavor making it excellent for almost any basil dish. Micro Greens - Spicy Blend

The Micro Greens Spicy Mix, ‘Asst. Genera and Species’, is the latest, greatest, tastiest, and healthiest trend in upscale resturants. Herb - Sweet Majoram

The Marjoram Sweet, ‘Origanum majorana’, has a sweeter, milder flavor than Oregano. It is wonderful when used fresh in many dishes. Some describe the flavor as having a hint of balsam. Try substituting Sweet Marjoram for Oregano in many popular dishes such as eggplant Parmesan or pizza. The plants are bushy, 1 to 2 foot tall and 2 foot wide. They produce small round, pale, grey-green, velvety, aromatic leaves. Tiny white or pink flowers occur in the summer. Sweet Marjoram is primarily used for culinary purposes. Marjoram is used with sausage, egg dishes, cheese dishes, lamb, veal, fish, green vegetables, darrots, beef, eggplant, cauliflower, dressings, squash, and tomatoes. Plant in the spring in well drained soil. Legend has it that if you touch Sweet Marjoram before bedtime, you will dream of your future spouse.

Gourd - Luffa

The Gourd Luffa Chinese Okra, Cee Gwa, Sze Qwa, ‘Luffa aegyptiaca’ is simple and easy to grow. Grow your own sponge! The Luffa Gourd can also be cooked and eaten like summer squash! What a useful vegetable, and fun for the whole family. Grow your own sponge for exfoliating and clearing your skin, scrubbing dishes, and cleaning the barbeque grill. When the gourds are harvested between 4 and 6 inches long, they are a sweet, tasty vegetable that can be stir-fried, sauteed, or cooked with meats just as you would zucchini squash or okra. Mature gourd seeds can be roasted, and young flowers and foliage can be cooked as a green. Plant in the spring,1 to 2 weeks after the last average frost date and when soil temperatures have risen above 60 degrees. Place the gourds in full sun. The soil must be well drained and have lots of organic material. When using the gourds for a sponge, harvest when they turn brown, feel light and rattle with loose seeds.

Fennel - Bronze-Smokey

The Fennel Bronze, ‘Foeniculum vulgare’, has stunningly beautiful, purple feathery plumes that provide a lacy contrast in the vegetable or flower garden. The Bronze Fennel is an absolutely dazzling, hard to find Fennel, that is used primarily for ornamental value and has tasty foliage and seeds. The tall feathery, smoky purple foliage provides a beautiful accent with pink and white roses or any other contrasting flower color. The Bronze Fennel attracts butterflies. The swallowtail butterfly lays eggs on fennel. The seed produced by the Bronze Fennell is used for flavoring cookies, breads, and cakes. Fresh leaves can be sprinkled on salads or used in salad dressings. Plant in the spring 2 weeks before the last average frost date. Fennel does best in well drained, sandy soils with lots of organic matter. They need to be kept moist.

Carrot - Royal Chantenay

The Carrot Royal Chantenay, ‘Daucus carota var staivus’, produces home grown carrots that taste better than store bought. They have a sweet, crisp, nice flavor and they are excellent for heavy, clay dominated soils. Royal Chantenay is considered an excellent all around carrot by combining excellent qualities such as flavor, shallow soil growth, and storage ability. They are a great container vegetable The Royal Chantenay produces a carrot that is thick, 5 to 6 inches long, and orange in color. Carrot seed germinates in soils as cold as 45 degrees, but performs best in warm soils. The first sowing should be 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost. Do successive planting every 3 weeks, until 70 days before the first fall frost. In very warm climates carrots are grown primarily in the fall. The single most important factor in growing carrots is to have a deep, clod and rock free, well drained soil. A 50% peat moss mix with the soil is ideal. Even moisture is essential.

Herb - French Tarragon

The French Tarragon, ‘Artemesia dranunculus sativa’, cannot be easily purchased. To obtain French Tarragon, you need to obtain plants or to use cuttings. French Tarragon has a spicy anise flavor that turns ordinary main dishes into masterpieces. Tarragon goes well with meat and vegetables and is a top choice in any hearty recipe. This herb reaches a height of 2 feet with an 18 inch spread. To use Tarragon in cooking, chop the leaves very fine to extract the flavor for cream sauces and bearnaise sauce. Add it to tuna or chicken salads, eggs and quiches, mayonnaises, and mustard salad dressings. It makes a wonderful flavored butter and can be combined with dill and parsley for fish. Protect your tarragon from harsh winters by mulching with shredded bark. Cut the plant back to the ground in spring, remove dead stems, and trim to shape. The plant also should be divided every 3 to 4 years. French Tarragon likes life on the dry side with plenty of sun. The soil should be well drained and watering should be thorough. Keep a good supply of fresh tips for cooking by cutting it back to the ground several times during the growing season. French Tarragon also makes a good choice for growing in a pot.
