Ginkgo

The Gingko tree, Ginkgo biloba, is the sole surviving species of a group of Gymnosperms that flourished 65 million years ago, the time when dinosaurs existed. Gingko trees are also called Maidenhair trees. This tree can have a lifespan as long as 1,000 years. It is the only living gymnosperm (which includes pines, firs, and spruces) that sheds its leaves during the fall. They turn bright yellow in autumn. The fruits are plum like, about 1″, and are orange-yellow when ripe. Tree can attain a height of 100 to 122 feet with a girth of 3 to 4 feet. In the Unites States, these deciduous trees are used for herbal supplements. Ginkgo biloba are sold as memory-boosters and “longevity” pills. The medicinal components of ginkgo are the dried leaves, the seeds separated from their fleshy outer layer, and the fresh leaves. Ginkgo are not native to North America, rather they are indigenous to China, Japan, and Korea, where they may still exist in remote mountainous parts. Today the tree is often planted in cities because of its remarkable resistance to urban smog and to insect pest. Our trees are sold unsexed.

Dwarf Alberta Spruce

The Dwarf Alberta Spruce, Picea glauca ‘Conica’, is a miniature Spruce with bright green foliage that is densely branched, slow growing and retains a perfect conical shape without trimming. The Dwarf Alberta Spruce is a small, cone- shaped tree that grows very slowly (2 to 4 inches per year) and rarely needs pruning. Its dense, bright green foliage makes it attractive. It is primarily a specimen plant and is often used as a container plant. It does need protection from the winter sun in exposed sites in zone 4. If planted farther south, summer heat and humidity are not to its liking, so try to locate it where it gets some afternoon shade but otherwise good light. The north or east side of the house is probably the best location. Make sure it’s planted in a fertile, well drained soil not allowed to get too dry during the summer. This is an excellent plant for adding structure, color and texture to your yard or garden. And if you have a small area, try this one in containers for that special place in your garden or patio.

Peony - Tree - Yoshino gawa

The Tree Peony Yoshino gawa, ‘Paeonia’, produces enormous bright pale pink of rare beauty. Every garden needs a tree peony. There was a time, many years ago in ancient China, when the only person who could own a tree peony was the Emperor himself. We’re not sure what the penalty was for infringing this law, but it can’t have been very pleasant. Fortunately for us, tree peonies are now slightly more available. There are very few plants that can compete with a tree peony in full bloom. They flower from late April to early May but the flowering season does vary from year to year. A mature plant can have in excess of a hundred flowers and these can be 10″ or more across! The flowers range in color from maroon, crimson, scarlet, various shades of pink, to pure white. There are also tree peonies with yellow or purple flowers. The Chinese refer to the tree peony as ‘Moutan’. This has been variously translated but probably means ‘The Emperor Flower’. While the tree peony originated in China, it had found its way to Japan by the 8th Century AD. Japanese tree peonies tend to have less double flowers than their Chinese peers, and the flowers are more open and delicate. Growing only 4-5′ tall, these exceptional Tree Peonies are sub-zero hardy and bloom for a lifetime.
