Tulip - Single Late - Maureen

The Tulip ‘Maureen’, ‘Tulipa single late’, a fall planted bulb, produces large and vibrant white flowers on tall stems. Maureen tulips provide great contrast to red and orange tulips. Single Late Tulips finish off the tulip season. They bloom in late spring. The blooms are large, oval, almost egg-shaped, on a long, sturdy stem. Single Late Tulips are good as cut flowers, for beds, and borders. They do not require the very cold winters of many other tulips, and are a good choice for warmer climates. They have tall strong stems and well-shaped blooms.

Heliotropium - Atlantis

The Heliotropium Atlantis, ‘Heliotropium arborescens’, a Proven Selections plant, produces violet-blue flowers that smell of fresh vanilla. They are quick to bloom and have a very compact habit. Plant the Atlantis in full sun or light shade in fertile and well drained soil. This plant is a great choice for mixed planters with its rich foliage and purple flower clusters. The Heliotropium plant is often called Heliotrope and is great for attracting Butterflies. For zones 9-11, this plant can also be a perennial.

Nasturtium - Mahogany

The Nasturtium Mahogany, ‘Tropaeolum majus’, has majestic deep red flowers in stunning contrast with bright-green foliage. Nasturtium Mahogany’s rich color is reminiscent of gleaming antique furniture, it adds “polish” to a garden bed. The deep red 2 to 21/2 inch flowers bloom 6 weeks after sowing. They will bloom all season until fall. The Mahogany prefer full sun but will withstand some shade. Nasturtiums perform well in bad soil, but is comfortable in average garden soil that is not overly fertile. When the blossom passes its peak, pinch off to the base of the stem. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date or fall plant in warmer climates. The flowers and leaves are edible. Nasturtiums are used for edging and borders. These plants will also deter whiteflies, squash bug, and rabbits.

Petunia - Supertunia Mini Purple

The Petunia Supertunia Mini Purple, ‘Petunia hybrids’, are wonderfully fragrant and have masses of small flowers and a vigorous trailing habit that turn hanging baskets and decorative urns into garden masterpieces. The Mini Purple Petunia has beautiful purple flowers. Supertunias are a vigorously trailing species of an everblooming, long-living petunia from Australia. They will provide long-term color in full sun areas throughout the season, and can grow nearly an inch a day. They are ideal for baskets, beds, balconies and combination plantings. Supertunias are very heat and drought tolerant once established in the ground or pot. They do not need to have their dead flower heads removed to continue flowering and they are not leggy. Supertunias grow fast and therefore need ample moisture and fertilzer. For zones 9-11, this plant can also be a perennial.

Sweet Pea - America

The Sweet Pea America, ‘Lathyrus odoratus’, is a very old heirloom sweet pea traced back to 1896. The crimson stripes on the soft white petal look like an exotic butterfly perched on a stem. The America is very fragrant and is a summer bloomer. The blooming period depends partially upon the weather because the plants usually stop blooming once the weather warms up. The America will take a little more heat and bloom longer into the summer. The Sweet Pea America has 2 inch flowers that are white with crimson stripes. A key element in successful growing of the Sweet Pea America is very early planting. The sweet pea prefers deep, rich, fertile soil. Use lots of peat or compost for early spring planting. Plant this sweet pea in full sun, but in a cool a spot as possible. Position them away from winds and rotate locations from year to year to prevent sweet pea pests. In cold climates plant the seed in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. In warm climates, plant in October through January for spring bloom. They are used for cut flowers and for covering fences and walls if given the proper support.

Begonia - Carnation PinkThe Begonia Carnation Pink, ‘Begonia Fimbriata Pink’, a spring planted tuber, displays big pink flowers that bloom in the summer. They do perform in the shade. They have an elegant robust look and the plants are filled with blooms. They are ideal for shady areas in need of color, under trees, and on decks. They look stunning when planted alone in large containers. They provide nonstop color when planted in containers or beds. These tuberous begonias feature beautiful flowers. Tuberous Begonias perform best in a partly shaded outdoor location away from strong winds. Fertilize regularly and keep the containers moist.

Grape Hyacinth - WhiteThe Grape Hyacinth ‘White’, ‘Muscari armeniacum’, a fall planted bulb, produce unassuming flowers that add a sweet, fragrant touch to the spring garden. This Muscari has become quite popular in recent years. Its white flower cluster is narrow and less compact than that of other Muscari armeniacum. The flowers remain beautiful for a long time, and they are very attractive to bees. Grape Hyacinths are a hardy, no-care, mid spring flowering bulb. They are excellent as cut flowers, for rock gardens, beds, borders, and under trees and bushes. Muscari often multiply and spread over the years.
